Atopic dermatitis (AD) commonly affects children, with topical corticosteroids (TCS) serving as the primary anti-inflammatory treatment. This study aimed to evaluate physicians’ TCS prescribing patterns in pediatric AD patients. A retrospective review of outpatient charts from 2020-2023 was conducted and TCS prescriptions were evaluated against local guidelines to determine medication therapy problems (MTP). A review of 51 charts revealed that weak potency TCS (57%) were most commonly prescribed and MTPs occurred in 35% of initial consultations. Fisher’s exact test revealed significant associations between the occurrence of MTPs and the use of different TCS potencies, including weak (p = 0.018), medium (p = 0.006), and strong (p = 0.004), and specific agents, such as Clobetasol propionate (p = 0.012), Hydrocortisone acetate (p = 0.040), and ointment formulations (p = 0.006). These findings highlight the need to optimize TCS prescribing practices, which may be achieved through physician-pharmacist co-management and enhanced patient counselling.
